THE first phase of a multi-million pound scheme to reduce the risk of flooding in Llanelli has begun.
Last week Dwr Cymru launched its £15 million RainScape scheme, which hopes to slash excess surface water running into the sewerage network by around 20 per cent.
As part of the scheme a shallow vegetated channel, or swale, will be installed on the playing field and greenery will also be planted. Residents will be kept informed throughout the first phase, which is due to finish in October.
Other water management techniques across Llanelli will include creating more green space and adding plants to absorb excess water.
The scheme was undertaken in Llanelli as its network sees almost as much storm water as Swansea, which is much bigger.
Dwr Cymru’s Nigel Annett said: “The delivery of RainScape will significantly reduce the risk of flooding in the local area.”
Carmarthenshire Council executive board member for technical services, Councillor Colin Evans said: “The authority are pleased to be working with Dwr Cymru and partners to tackle problems brought about by climate change.”
