“Show shop workers respect,” says Joyce

AM backs campaign to protect staff from violence, threats and abuse
With one weekend to go before Christmas, Assembly Member Joyce Watson is backing a campaign to remind shoppers to respect staff.
Retail union Usdaw launched its Freedom From Fear campaign to prevent violence, threats and abuse against shop workers.
Mrs Watson said:
“Last minute Christmas shopping can be stressful but it is never acceptable to take out frustrations on staff.
“Intimidation and abuse should never be just part of the job – I support Usdaw’s plea to make retail fear free.”
John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary, said:
“We are grateful to Joyce for supporting our campaign to keep our members safe at work.
“Often, in the course of their duties, shopworkers are expected to enforce the law, whether that is preventing under-age purchases of products like knives, tobacco or alcohol, or detaining shoplifters until the police arrive, they deserve respect and protection.
“Over 300 shopworkers are assaulted every day and it is time to say enough is enough. Politicians must work together to address this issue and act quickly.”
