Joyce Watson AM has congratulated Montgomery Cricket Club on their work with local children to record and celebrate their history.
They successfully applied for a grant of £14,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Your Heritage programme to record The History of Montgomery Cricket Club 1840-1990.
They will document the history of their club from 1840 to 1990, capturing the playing and social aspects of the game and putting them in context with the events of the day. The 18 month project will involve local schoolchildren and youth members of the club and will lead to the creation of two books of newspaper cuttings and an oral record of the memories of the oldest surviving members of the club.
Local Assembly Member Joyce Watson said: “This is a celebration both of the past and of the future. Getting local children to interview the oldest club members to record their memories will build their skills, knowledge and confidence, as well as doing the important job of recording the club’s history.
“The project involves all generations, with work by young and older members.
“Montgomery Cricket Club have been at the heart of their local community for 160 years, and I am delighted that HLF has given them the means to record their contribution for future generations.”
