£70 Million Boost for Free School Meals

Senedd Members Joyce Watson and Eluned Morgan have welcomed the expansion of free school meals in all primary schools in Wales.

The Welsh Government has announced £70 million in funding will go to supporting the expansion of the programme, which has so far served nearly 5 million additional free meals since it began in September 2022.

The Labour Mid and West Wales duo cheered the news.

Joyce Watson MS said:

“Delivery of the scheme by Local Authorities has been impressively swift. Most learners across Wales in Reception, year one and year two already benefit from the offer of free school meals. This next stage, starting this September, will include most learners in years three and four, before expanding to years five and six from April 2024.”

Eluned Morgan MS said:

“No child should go hungry, and all children deserve access to nutritious food. We know how difficult it is for families during the cost-of-living crisis. This investment in universal free school meals will help schools in mid and west Wales, so children can focus on and enjoy their time learning.”
