Local AM hosts Assembly vigil against domestic violence – One woman killed every three days this year

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Local Assembly Member Joyce Watson yesterday (22 November) hosted two ‘Not in my Name’ events at the Senedd, Cardiff Bay, to campaign to end violence against women and children.
Survivors of domestic violence spoke at a lunchtime event, along with senior figures working to tackle violence. A candlelight vigil was held at dusk. Actor Michael Sheen is supporting the campaign.
Ysgol Y Preseli pupil Jayde Collings, as Mrs Watson’s special guest, attended the afternoon session with her father, Jeff, and sister, Pembrokeshire College student, Jasmine.
Sheila Cousins, a member of Trelech WI, Eirwen James of Llanddewi Brefi branch (runners up) and Therese Casemore from Usk (winner) read out their prose competition pieces. Members of Llandrindod Wells WI travelled to Cardiff for the evening event.
Joyce Watson AM said:
“The figures are stark. In the first 10 months of this year – just 304 days – 102 women were killed by men across the UK – that’s one woman every three days.
“I urge everyone to get involved and make a simple pledge: to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and children.
“I am pleased that so many people, including members from all political parties, are showing their support by promoting the White Ribbon pledge.
“This activity has grown year on year, with other events in Carmarthen, Haverfordwest, Aberystwyth, Llandudno, Usk and across Wales to say no to violence against women and children.
“I look forward to the day when we don’t have to campaign, but while we see figures like these we must carry on – it’s important the message gets out far and wide.”
The Mid and West Wales AM, anti-violence campaigner, began White Ribbon activity in Wales 11 years ago with the first White Ribbon service at Llandaff Cathedral. Joyce is attending vigil in Carmarthen on Thursday (24 November) evening.
Mrs Watson organised this fifth Assembly Day of Action with the Women’s Institute to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, 25 November.
Each year they work with male ambassadors from across Welsh life to join together to ask men to sign the White Ribbon pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and children.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
